Health & wellness isn’t just about nutrition and fitness, it’s so much bigger! Since I know some incredible people in the wellness space, I’m starting a Q&A series where I can ask them the questions we all have, but can’t ever find a clear answer to.

First up: skincare. I’m finally spending some time on my skin, and there are so many products and opinions out there! It’s so overwhelming. So I decided to talk with my friend, Reena (Skn_NP, esthetician), to ask her all the questions so you can feel empowered in your own skincare.

So without further ado, let’s get into it!

Shaina: Reena, what inspired you to become an esthetician?

Reena: I love helping people! I’m a nurse and love helping people in that role, and I love helping you glow as an esthetician! Helping is my love language, and making you feel good in your skin is my goal!

Shaina: What’s something you used to believe about skincare that you’ve since changed your mind on?

Reena: That you need all the products. Growing up, I thought we needed a 10-step skin care routine. I have come to find out that a small but consistent skincare plan is what's best!

Shaina: How can someone build a skincare routine without it feeling overwhelming or expensive?

Reena: Keep it simple! 3 products in the morning and 2 products in the evening! In the morning, you’ll want a cleanser, moisturizer, and SPF. In the evening, focus on a cleanser and moisturizer. Oftentimes, good skincare products are cheaper than your daily coffee!

Shaina: I feel like I always see so many pricy skincare products. Do the affordable products work as well as the more expensive ones?

Reena: Yes, yes, yes! But it's not a one-size-fits-all; it's very dependent on your skin type.

Shaina: What’s a common skincare myth you wish women would stop believing?

Reena: Ah! If you have oily skin, you don't need to moisturize as much or at all. This is SO FALSE. Our skin likes to be moisturized, even if it's oily. Many times, we have an increase in oil production because our skin is seeking moisture and trying to protect itself!

Shaina: What’s the #1 mistake you see women making with their skin?

Reena: Using too many products or following social media trends. We all have different skin with different needs. If you ever have questions on what's right for you, reach out to your local esti bestie!

Shaina: What’s one change we could make this month that our future skin will thank us for?

Reena:  SPF! SPF! SPF! Honestly, nothing else matters if we are not protecting our skin daily! We need SPF DAILY! Rainy, sunny, snowy… etc, we need it every day! Even if you are just at home and not outside, our phones, TVs, and tablets all give off UV rays, which are harmful to our skin!

Shaina: How do sleep, stress, or nutrition affect our skin?

Reena: Sleep, stress, and nutrition all affect our skin. When our body or health is off, so is our skin. This will likely show up in tired-looking skin and increased breakouts.

Shaina: Okay, last question! What’s your go-to product you can’t live without?

Reena: Sorry to sound like a broken record, but it’s gonna be the SPF for me! I use one from Image Skincare, it’s a matte finish, and I love it!

Final Takeaway:

Thank you so much, Reena! Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions and help us cut through all of the noise around skincare. If there’s one thing we learned, it’s that Reena is all about SPF, and now I am too!

Reena and I may do a part two, so if you have a burning skincare question, be sure to drop it in the comments!

Next month, we will be switching gears and talking with a period cycle coach about how to understand your cycle rather than just being along for the ride. Stay tuned!
